A query in the English question paper given to class 7 students at a school in Bihar’ Kishanganj has sparked a major row, after it identified Kashmir as a separate country.

In the exam, students were asked what the people of five countries -- China, Nepal, England, Kashmir and India -- are called.

The matter soon gained a political colour, as the BJP roundly condemned the slip-up and accused the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance government of appeasement politics.

BJP District President Sushant Gope said, “This is an attempt to give air to the politics of appeasement of the Mahagathbandhan. There is an attempt to show Kashmir and India apart in the minds of children. It is not a mistake, it is part of Nitish Kumar's conspiracy to gain political traction before the upcoming elections.”

However, school authorities clarified the question paper was set by the Bihar Education Board for government schools. The original question was “What are people from Kashmir called?”, but what went on the question paper was a misprint due to human error.
